Best Greenhouse for Canadian Winters: Snow Load Ratings Compared

Which greenhouse actually survives a Canadian winter? The short answer: of the models we sell, the Glory (10 mm twin-wall polycarbonate, 20 psf snow load, 10-year warranty) and the Bella (bell-shaped roof that sheds snow, 20 psf) are the two rated for year-round use in cold regions. If you only grow from spring to fall, you do not need to pay for that strength, and we will show you where the savings are. Every rating below is the manufacturer's tested spec, the same numbers printed on each product page.

How to Read a Snow Load Rating

Snow load is measured in pounds per square foot (psf) or kilograms per square metre (kg/m²). A 20 psf rating means every square foot of roof can carry about 20 pounds of snow. The catch is that snow weight varies wildly: 10 cm of dry powder weighs a fraction of 10 cm of wet March snow. That is why we publish a snow density table and a snow load calculator that convert your model's psf rating into real inches of snow. Two rules apply to every greenhouse: clear heavy snow off the roof regardless of rating, and anchor the frame properly (see our foundation guide).

Snow Load and Wind Ratings by Model

Balance 10 ft. 20 psf (100 kg/m²) 100 km/h 3 seasons
Aria 10 ft. (10 mm roof) 16 psf (80 kg/m²) 120 km/h 3 seasons
Natura 8 ft. cedar 16 psf (80 kg/m²) 100 km/h 3 seasons

Hybrid, Mythos, Harmony, Balance 8 ft., Essence, Oasis, Lean-To 15.4 psf (75 kg/m²) 90 km/h Spring to fall / hobby
SanRemo solarium 31 psf (150 kg/m²) 120 km/h Enclosure / sunroom

The Winter Pick: Glory 10 mm Twin-Wall

The Glory series is the greenhouse we point to first when a customer says "I get real winters." Its 10 mm twin-wall polycarbonate panels are the thickest glazing in our lineup, which means better insulation, diffused light for even growth, and the structural strength behind that 20 psf snow rating. It comes with a reinforced frame, an integrated gutter system, lockable double doors, a galvanized steel base, and a 10-year manufacturer's warranty. The 8 ft. series runs from 8x8 up to 8x20, and there is a compact Glory 6x8 for smaller yards.

The Smart Alternative: Bella's Bell Shape

The Bella 8 ft. series earns its year-round rating differently: geometry. The bell-shaped roof gives snow no flat surface to sit on, so it slides off instead of accumulating, and the curved profile improves wind behaviour. Panels are 6 mm twin-wall on the roof and walls, and sizes run from 8x8 all the way to 8x32. If you like a softer look than the Glory's barn profile and still want 20 psf strength, this is the one.

If You Want a True Winter Room: SanRemo

The strongest structure we sell is not technically a greenhouse. The SanRemo solarium is rated to 31 psf of snow and 120 km/h winds. It is designed as a patio enclosure and winter garden rather than a dedicated growing house, but for gardeners who want an attached, walk-in winter space for overwintering plants, it is the heavyweight option.

Match the Rating to Your Region

In heavy-snow country, think lake-effect zones, the Prairies, most of Quebec and the Maritimes, treat 20 psf as your minimum and plan to clear the roof after major storms. In milder areas like coastal BC, snow load matters less than wind: the Aria at 120 km/h wind resistance is worth a look. And remember that a snow rating is structural, not thermal. Growing through a Canadian January also takes heat: see our guide to growing in the harsh Canadian winter for heating, lighting, and crop choices.
